Planting boxes can be bolted together to create mini gardens and farms, with this simple construction system devised by Danish architects Sine Lindholm and Mads-Ulrik Husum.

It's a modular building kit that can be assembled in endless different configurations to make a unique 3-d space.

The system consists of just six parts, which include a standard-sized planting box, shelves and fixings.

Multi-Sensorial Urban Garden in Italy

Joselyn McDonald

Project Zighizaghi is a multi-sensory urban garden constructed in Favara, Italy.  It is made of a horizontal level, the floor and seating area, and a vertical level, the lighting and sound systems. There are also numerous plants included in the design, like lemon trees and lavender. The horizontal level is made up of modular hexagons that were inspired by the honeycombs made by bees.

Concrete Eco Puzzle Pavillion

Joselyn McDonald

The walls of this Mexico City pavilion by local architect Gerardo Broissin are made from concrete panels pieced together like a jigsaw puzzle.

Broissin created the perforated exterior to allow sunlight, oxygen and rain to enter the pavilion and allow the plants to thrive.

The structure was built in the grounds of Mexico City's contemporary art museum Museo Tamayo as part of the Design Week Mexico festival.

URBAN FARM POD WITH AGRONOMY

Joselyn McDonald

The Urban Farm Pod is a “living” cabin for individuals and families living in cities to grow the vegetables they require to meet their daily needs.

Six artists in Johannesburg, South Africa, exchanged ideas on how to design creative solutions to the city’s issues. “The theme of the project was for us to transform the immediate surroundings and engage with them in a creative way,” says r1. The street artist also teamed up with Sam, a local resident who makes upholstery couches, to create the upcycled folding benches.

Each wooden unit comprises three interlocking components: a central planter flanked by two benches with retractable seats; the three components can be fully collapsed to make a compact shape or expanded like an accordion to create a variety of configurations. Sam and r1 also added three sets of wheels to the bottom of each structure to make the benches easily moveable. The artist placed the completed benches around the city, from street corners to alleyways, to see how residents would react to the new site furniture.
