'Deep fakes' and Democracies

Hannah Young

Videos can be faked to make people say things they never actually said. This poses dangers for democracy. Can you spot ALL the deep fake interviews in this film?

Visual manipulation is nothing new; it has always been a powerful form of propaganda or a means to mislead. The most famous “photograph” of Abraham Lincoln – you know the one – is actually a print of Lincoln’s head grafted on to the body of somebody else. Many famous first world war photographs of brave Tommies going over the top were actually shot miles from the frontline, in relative safety.

Should we be worried about this? How can deep fake videos impact democracy? How can we really trust what we see? Can information be weaponised? Leave your comments below.
