Sketch Your Idea

Joselyn McDonald

Instructions

Review your list of ideas for a creative handwashing device in your local community. Which one are you most interested in developing?

Pick your favourite brainstormed idea and think about it some more.

For some tips on aspects to think about as you develop your idea, watch this brief video from our expert, Fiona Ritchie, founder of Scottish soap company Siabann.

A few questions you might consider are:

  • How will it people in the community know what it is?
  • What materials will it be made of?
  • How will it be supported?
  • How will it dispense water/ soap/ sanitiser?

Now, draw a detailed sketch of your very own handwashing device idea - showing how someone would use it.

Use detail, colour, and add descriptions to the drawing to help a viewer easily understand your design and how people will use it. We encourage using pens, markers, or pencils to make your sketch. If you prefer to use digital tools to create your illustration, please feel free to do so.

To learn more about various types of sketching, and useful techniques, watch this short video, also accessible from the Resources tab above, made by our collaborators at the NuVu Studio in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Tip: It's helpful to include human-like figures in your drawing to represent scale and possible kinds of interaction.

Optional:  If you want to get into greater detail about how your device will operate and how people will use it, you might want to consider additional questions such as:

  • How will the water/ soap/ sanitiser be replenished?
  • Will people need to dry their hands - if so, how will they do it?
