Research: Site Analysis

Introduction

All creative and useful designs begin with research. Research allows designers to make something uniquely useful for their target audience.

For this challenge, you are tasked with designing a handwashing device that people want to use (perhaps because it's playful, beautifully designed, has game-like features, etc.). Before you can begin brainstorming ideas for the design, you must consider where the handwashing device would ideally be located and, by extension who would be using it. For example, if you decide that your handwashing device will go in a playground, then you should consider ways to encourage children to use it.

Research Activity

For this research, you should observe one or more locations in your community where you think a handwashing device could be potentially beneficial (e.g., a public park, a place where people eat, in a playground, near public transport, etc.). This is an excellent activity for you to do with family or friends - take a walk together and observe locations through this lens.

Pick one location and make a simple map (a paper and pencil sketch is fine!) of the general area. Make sure to indicate where you'd like to potentially add your handwashing device (an "X" marking the spot will do nicely!)

Alternatively, you can find and record a location using Google Maps!

Write 2-3 sentences describing the location. Answer the following questions in your reflection: why you'd like to put your handwashing device there? What kinds of people would use your invention (e.g., children, families, commuters, etc.).

When you submit your project at the end, you will include your sketch and your sentences.
