Hello to you all.
I have enjoyed meeting you all this week and look forward to meeting more of you tomorrow. I will send out a confirmation of the structure of the Prelim after all of the Zoom calls have taken place so you can share your thoughts with me.
In the mean time, I would be appreciative if you would take a few minutes to complete this feedback form so I can understand better any issues that you have had or are having with the online course.
You will also have seen that I have created a new 20-mark Power, Authority and Legitimacy extended response question as you may wish to revise this for the Prelim and final exam. You can find that here.
I hope that you are avidly following the US Presidential election that is still ongoing!
I wanted to ask a quick question about the format and timing of Prelims in your school.
Please could you reply to this post by adding in comments about the following:
1. The dates of your Prelim diet (ie: when do they begin and end?)
2. Do you have split Prelims where say 60% of the course is assessed, or full Prelims where the whole course is assessed?
If you could respond as soon as you are able, this would be very helpful!
Hello to you all,
I hope that you are all well.
Thank you for the work uploaded to your student folders. I have assessed all of the work that I have received so far. Please get in touch if you believe that this is not the case and I will look into it.
I would like to offer you all a Zoom call, either as a group or individually. This is not compulsory, but I think that it would be nice to just meet face to face. The call would last no more than 20 minutes at a time to suit you. You may have your camera on or off. The call would not be a taught lesson and there is no requirement for you to answer Politics based questions - it is just an opportunity for social interaction.
Please could you complete this feedback form so I can get a sense of how you are finding the course so far. Your feedback is incredibly valuable to me as I can adapt the learning and teaching delivery and materials if you let me know if something is not quite working for you.
Hello to you all
I hope that you all had a restful half term break.
Yesterday I made a quick video for you outlining next steps. Please take time to watch the update video this week.
As always, email me with any questions or add them as a comment below.
There have been major changes to the Higher Politics course following John Swinney's announcement in the Scottish Parliament yesterday (7/8/2020).
You need to be aware of the following:
2. The Political Parties and Elections unit will contain the only 12 mark essay question in Paper 1.
3. The Political Parties and Elections section of the exam will contain all three topics (dominant ideas of political parties, political campaign strategies and theories of voting behaviour). You will be able to choose one of these topics to write about.
So, what this means is that you can choose to just learn and revise one of these Unit 3 topics and only as a 12 mark essay and you do not need to the Assignment.
Should you have any questions, please email me at Youngfirstname.lastname@example.org
Well Autumn feels as though it has arrived... you may be on your October half term break, and if so, you should make sure that you have some down time from school work.
If you are planning on doing some of your Higher Politics work this week, I would advise that you complete the Lukes essay making sure that you access the lessons, notes and videos before you attempt this first piece of work.
You may also wish to have a look at the Assignment. Feel free to email me any ideas or questions that you may have.
It is a good idea to keep your eye on the news for ideas for the Assignment. As we know, Politics touches everything, so there is no shortage of topics to choose from. Take a look at this page for some ideas and of course, the Politics and International Relations Society for even more. The Society will run in person at Dollar this week, and although you will not be present, you can still take a look and participate in the online discussion. This week we are going to find out what is going on right now in Belarus. You are very welcome to take a look at the prompts for the discussion and add your views.
Have a great week.....I am hoping to set up some group Zoom calls in a few weeks. These will not be compulsory, just a chance to meet and talk about what you are finding useful, not useful and for me to answer any questions. It will not be a taught lesson and you can have your cameras on/off as you wish.
Have a great day,
Good morning to you all. I hope that you have had a restful weekend and are ready to study some more Politics this week!
It would be my advice to keep working through the Power, Authority and Legitimacy theme of study. You should take a look at the schedule of tasks that I have set. Perhaps download this and save it to your device, but at the very least, take a look at it online so you can plan out your workload for the week.
The Politics and International Relations Society runs every Monday in person at Dollar Academy, however just because you are not here in person does not mean that you cannot participate. Today the group will be talking about the Belt and Road Initiative.
Participation in the Society is not compulsory, but it might be a good idea to take a look at some of the topics of discussion there as they would make for interesting Assignment topics.
It is a good idea to begin thinking about your Assignment. I can help to support you through the coursework aspect of the course. This can be done at any point before the Easter holidays. You will sit this internal assessment at your own school unless you have made prior arrangements with me to sit the Assignment at Dollar Academy. If you are unsure, please ask your teacher or SQA Coordinator and let me know your position when you can.
As always, should you have any questions, please email me at Youngemail@example.com
Hello to all to you all!
I am delighted that you are going to be studying Higher Politics either independently with Dollar Discovers or alongside your own Politics classes at your school.
You are all very welcome.
I see that some of you have made a start with the Political Theory unit of study, starting with Power, Authority and Legitimacy. I see that some of you have read the extracts provided, watched and responded to the videos on political power. I have enjoyed reading your comments and ideas.
If you haven't yet begun then this is probably the best place to start as the theory of power underpins the content of the rest of the course.
You will have your own goals and timeframes, so I will not stipulate when work should be submitted. When you are ready and able, the first piece of work will be the 12 mark extended response about Steven Lukes.
If you upload your response to this question to your student folder, I will mark it and return it to you with feedback. This will then help to form the body of evidence showing your progress.
If you have any questions, please email me and I will get right back to you.
