Introduction

In this section of the Challenge, you will explore why monuments can cause tensions in the community, through the story of the Henry Dundas statue, one of the major historical landmarks in Scotland's capital city, Edinburgh.  The monument commemorates Dundas, a prominent lawyer and politician in the late 18th and early 19th Century.  Today, he is a controversial figure, due to differing views on his role in the ending of British involvement in the slave trade.  

PART A - The Dundas Controversy

Read the story of Henry Dundas (you can also access it at any time using the tab 'The Dundas Controversy' above).  You will learn about the different perspectives on his role in ending Britain's involvement in the slave trade, and consider what the approach to his monument should be.

PART B - Activity

Once you have read the Dundas story, write a 3-4 sentence response choosing a pro or anti-Dundas position. There is no right or wrong position, so choose whichever perspective you prefer to argue. You should conclude by saying whether you think the Dundas statue in Edinburgh should be removed or should stay in place.  You will need to submit this work at the end of the project.
