Amazing Earthworms

Joselyn McDonald

If you were asked which animals are most crucial to the survival of the planet, earthworms might not immediately spring to mind.  But Charles Darwin put them right at the top of the list: "It may be doubted if there are any other animals which have played such an important part in the history of the world as these lowly organised creatures". Earthworms are fascinating animals and critically important for the health of the soil that we rely on to sustain life.

Instructions

In this step of the challenge, you will watch the two very short videos posted below. The first video is an introduction to earthworms and their valuable contributions to the ecosystem. The second video is about how wormeries (also known as worm farms) are designed to allow earthworms to break down food waste into rich soil used in gardening and farming.

Record Your Work

After you've watched both videos, write 2-3 sentences about what you learned about earthworms and worm farming that you didn't know before. You'll be submitting these sentences at the end of the challenge, so don't lose them!
