What Do I Use?

Joselyn McDonald

Instructions

Spend a few minutes going around your living space collecting waste packaging materials. A recycling bin can be a good place to start.  Also look for other packaging that can't be recycled. Wear gloves if you’re going to touch anything that is potentially unhygienic. Bring all of the materials together, and spend roughly 10 minutes writing down your observations.

Consider the following questions:

  1. What materials are used to make the packaging you've found in your home?

  2. What is the relationship between the shape and/or rigidity of the packaging material and whether it can be recycled?

  3. What are some of your/your family’s habits around packaging materials? How much do you recycle, and how much do you discard? Do you reuse any of it? Make shopping decisions based on packaging?

Write 3-4 sentences about your observations and reflections. You’ll be sharing them at the end of the challenge, so make sure to save them. If you'd like to take a photo of what you collected, we'd love to see that too!
